Should Mr B apply for the X-Factor?

In Literacy we have been working on writing balanced arguments. Here is Kirby's argument about whether Mr Broafield should apply for the X-Factor.

Should Mr Broadfield apply for X Factor?

Mr Broadfield, a class teacher in St Mary’s Church of England Primary School believes he has the talent to appear on X Factor and is scheduled to apply. Do you think the adventurous assistant head should try?

Many people believe Mr Broadfield is just lacking in the talent to singing on X Factor. His awful singing may bring shame to the proud legacy of St Mary’s which has won numerous honours, prizes and award for its performances. It is unlikely Mr Broadfield will be able to escape Simon Cowell’s cruel glare.

It is likely Mr Broadfield will be laughed of stage. This will possibly make him lose so much confidence that he will quit his role as class teacher. This would be a major loss to St Mary’s. They would lose one of their best  teachers and many would find it hard to imagine a St Mary’s without Mr Broadfield.

Of course there is the chance that Mr Broadfield could get in. With his awful singing he could make the judges laugh so much that they let him enter. (Only if Simon Cowell is in a good mood though) In fact, if he were inspiring enough more children might come to St Mary’s.

Even though Mr B might fail Mrs Packer will still be proud of him. She always says “Follow your dreams” Why not Mr B? Despite losing he will still be a popular teacher!

Stained Glass Windows

Children in 5/6B have been creating stained glass windows with a religious theme. Oyinde and Malachi have used GIMP to produce their windows. Oyinde's window is showing the Rastafarian symbol, the Lion of Judah and Malachi has created an abstarct combination of a Rangoli pattern and the Islamic symbol.

more Black History

Following on from Krishari's work here is Patience's article about the 'Rumble in the Jungle.'

 He stings like a bee

Muhammad Ali triumphed last night to beat the big, ugly bear George Foreman. This strong lean fighting machine knocked out his opponent using a technique known as “Rope-A-Dope”. After being banned from the game he loves for three and a half years he came back fighting for his title. Not expected or favoured to win, Ali still persevered. Beginning in the second round, Ali began to act out his master plan and started laying on the ropes allowing Foreman to give him some energy burning punches to the body. Ali’s bravery shined to take such a punishment. When the big, scary dragon Foreman began tiring Ali began to hit more effectively and then Muhammad’s golden hit arrived he swung and the big, scary tiger was no more. Ali commented “That big ugly beast was not that hard but now he is like a cute furry hamster I am the greatest.”

Jesse Owens newspaper article.

As part of our Black and Asian history celebration children wrote newspaper articles about significant events. Here is Krishari's article about Jesse Owens and the 1936 Olympic games. Jesse Owens, the fastest man on earth, won a significant four gold medals in Berlin, in front of Hitler. Hitler was annoyed. Owens had proved him wrong and showed that all men are equal and can attend the Olympics. No one in Berlin was able to beat him. He never gave up and neither should you. He worked so hard to achieve his gold medal and it was a beautiful success. When Owens first attended the Olympics he felt scared. He was scared because he was one of the few black people that attended but when he came first, he was blown away with surprise after everyone cheered for him. He was like a mega running machine. I’m sure after he came first, Hitler’s face burst with jealousy. Jesse Owens is a man and was born a man. Jesse Owens has saved the U.S.A. On August 3, he won the amazing 100m sprint. Later in the the week he won the 200m, the long jump and the 4x100m relay. Jesse Owens' achievement is huge because, I’ll tell you what, no one else has won more than four gold medals except him. People say that Jesse Owens is a hero.

Explanation Texts

This week in Literacy we have been looking at explanation texts. Here Krishari has tried to explain how Mr Broadfield lost his hair! Eli has had a go too!

Mr B, a year 5 and 6 teacher, lost his afro by using something he shouldn’t have used in the first place. Who could solve the mystery of the afro loss? Well this is how it all happened. Mr Broadfield, last week Sunday, was out all night and was too lazy to get up the following morning. He had a quick hot shower and rushed so much he used red hair dye. He came out the shower, looked in the mirror and screamed “AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH. I’ve ruined my afro. What am I going to do? Well the only thing I can do is......Cut of my beautiful afro.” Looks like it was goodbye afro and hello baldy. “Oh no I’ve turned into..... MR BALDY! Looks like Mr Broadfield is going to be like this forever.

On the fourth day of the summer holidays my fab teacher Mr. Broadfield was up at 7:00 am exactly. He got dressed, washed behind his ears and brushed his teeth in record timing. Today Mr B was going bungee jumping ! Off a Helicopter! Over the Ocean! He’s incredibly brave. Mr. B drove like lightning in his lambagine towards the airport. It was a beautiful day. As he arrived at the airport he could see the helicopter glistening in the breeze. The helicopter took off as soon as he got on. It was nearly time to jump. He tied the string around his leg and before he could stop himself he jumped out like a kangaroo! The pilot told him to stop but it was too late. Mr B’s hair had gone! What would the pupils at St. Mary’s say?

Multiple Path Stories.

In Literacy we have been looking at multiple path stories. Here is Damion's excellent story called "Don't be late!"

Don’t Be Late!

Chapter 1

It was a school day. I was in class 4J with boring Mrs Jones. She was an evil dragon with no manners. We were doing science and it was so dull. Every second seemed like a minute and every minute seemed like an hour.  I was so tempted to go outside. Then the bell rang 3 times. I jumped out of my chair and darted outside.  In my head I remembered what my mum had said earlier “don’t be late it’s your grandma birthday and you can’t miss it.” As I walked home I saw my friend Damion. He told me that he had money to go and spend at the sweet shop. He invited me to join him. I knew I would be late home if I went with him but I was so tempted. Should I go with Damion or not?

Chapter 2

Damion managed to persuade me and I went to the shop with him. Excitedly I raced down the road and headed for the shop. I was so excited I nearly knocked over a poor little old lady walking down the road. When we arrived at the shop we filled a shopping basket with lots of sweets. We bought haribos, snickers and mentoes. After that went outside and stuffed our face with sweets. Then I saw the time it was 4:00 o’clock. I was going to be late home. My mum would be furious.  Then Damion told me about a shortcut that would get me home on time or I could take the long way but I would be late still. I knew the shortcut would be scary but I didn’t want to be late. I didn’t know what to decide.

Chapter 3

Sensibly I ignored Damion and carried on home. I felt happy because the sun was in the sky and I knew I would make it home on time. Birds sang happy songs as I paced home in a relaxed way. As I continued my journey I saw Jayden on the other side of the road. I thought in my head that speaking to Jayden for a bit wouldn’t make me late so I crossed the road. Jayden told me that the new battlefield 3 game was out at the arcade and he was going to play on it. He asked me if I wanted to go and play the game with him. Battlefield 3 was the best game ever and I was really tempted to play even though I knew I would be late home.  I couldn’t decide whether to take the bus home or go to the arcade.

____________
Chapter 4

I decided to take dark alley way. As I approached the alley I felt terrified, scared and petrified. My heart raced like a speeding car. The alley was dark and smelled disgusting. I could see graffiti on the wall and the floor was covered in leaves and litter.  Even though I was scared I carried on walking because I didn’t want to be late. I carried on walking but then I saw a group of people spraying graffiti on wall. I was too scared to go right through them so I turned back and took the long way home.  I knew I would get into trouble for being late.

 ____________
Chapter 5

I decided to take the long way home. I knew if I ran I might just make it on time. I ran as fast as I could to make it as sweat was pouring down my head. I came to the last corner and as I came across I could hear fire engines and I saw police men telling people that the road was blocked off. I was vexed because I knew I would be late and my mum would go mad. Sadly, I turned around and set off on my journey home, knowing I would be late.

Chapter 6

I decided to go in the arcade. As I entered the arcade I saw flashing lights and I could hear the sound of kids cheering. Excitedly I played Battle Field 3 with Jayden. It was so much fun. Then I looked at the time and I realised I was going to be late. Quickly I yelled bye to Jayden as I sprinted out of the arcade. As I ran sweat poured down my head and I felt tired. I thought I was going to be late and mum would get out the wooden spoon! I tried my hardest to get home on time.

  ____________
Chapter 7

I decided not to go with Jayden and took the bus home. I felt happy that I would make it home early. The journey seemed to be going well. I sat calmly on the back seat and looked out the window. Trees waved at me in the cool breeze. Suddenly the bus started to shake. Soon smoke started to pour out. I realised the bus had broken down and the driver, who was very cross, told everyone they had to get off. Then I had to run home, it was a disaster. There was no way I would make it on time.

  ____________
Chapter 8

As I put the key in the door the door opened wide. My mum was standing there with a face of stone. I could tell she was furious. I tried to make excuses and explain that I had meant to come home early but she wouldn’t listen. My mum grabbed me and dragged me to the kitchen; she opened the drawer and picked up a wooden spoon. She yelled now time for a beating! I felt scared and unhappy. To my surprise she pulled out a bowl full of ingredients. “Now take the spoon and beat this good, as your punishment you’re going to make my cake!”
