Green Screen

As part of our work on "The Ghost of Thomas Kempe" children in 5B have been planning and writing News Reports. We conducted a "press conference" with some of the main characters from the story in order to gain information to include in the news reports. The children filmed the press conference in front of a green screen so that a studio background could be added later. Here is some footage from the press conference.

In Literacy we have been looking at extracts from a book call The Ghost of Thomas Kempe. We have also been looknig at ways to improve our sentences. We have discussed using adjectives to add detail and varying the sentence structure to add information to a sentence and engage the reader. Use the WallWisher booard to post sentences using conjucntions, connectives, powerful verbs and precise adjectives based on the extracts we have read.

The Firework Maker's Daughter - A Review by Calum

The Firework –Makers Daughter is a novel made for children written by Philip Pullman.  It was first published in the United Kingdom in 1995. He wrote it and it got adapted to play. Philip Pullman wrote school plays. There were erupting volcanoes, talking elephants and firework displays are all part of this high-energy production.

The novel’s main character is a young girl called Lila. Lila wants to be a firework-maker, like her father Lachand. Lachand believes this is not suitable job for a young girl. Lila disagrees, and goes to get royal sulphur from Razvani. She has to go to Mount Merapi as all firework-makers must do. She has to give 3 gifts to Razvani called talent, courage , and luck. She does not realize what the 3 gifts are. She has talent, having to work with her father for firework-making for many years. She has courage, for undertaken the journey. She had 2 loyal friends, Chulak and Hamlet, the talking elephant.

The special effects and acting were phenomenal not only could they speak with loud voices they could act well and play different musical instruments. Very talented! My favorite part was when a German guy showed his display of fireworks and when he laughed.

Carrying on with our theme of orally presenting biographies Tawana decided she wanted to present her work using Animoto. With the help of Gurdeep and Sukhminder she produced the following video.

Using QR Codes

Today children in 5B used QR codes for the first time. A QR code is like a barcode which can be read by special software on computers or smartphones. Free sites online allow you to convert web address into these 'barcodes'. Once you 'scan' the code using a camera the software opens the link in a web browser.

In Literacy the children performed presentations. These were filmed using flipcams and uploaded to the internet. The children then used a QR code generator to generate a code which was stuck into their books. This allows anyone looking through the books to scan the QR code and view their presentations online.

In Literacy we have been looking at the author Philip Pullman. This afternoon children in 5B performed oral biographies of Philip Pullman. Here is one group's work.

This afternoon we have been exploring digital art. Children took photos of themselves and positioned themselves in various places. Here is a first effort by Reece and Jahniah.

In Literacy we have been looking at autobiographies and biographies. Today children in 5B have been using the Internet to find out all about Pullman's life and work. In preparation for writing a biography about Philip Pullman the children have been organising their research and ideas using mind maps. In Art we have been looking at how artists show movement in their work. Calum has used GIMP to create a picture that shows motion.

In Literacy we have been looking at recounts. Children were given notes from a fictional football match and asked to produce a match report. Here is Dequanne's work.

Over the last few weeks we have been working hard using GIMP and Comic Life to produce comics based on the poem The Bully Asleep. Here is finished work by Shenaz, Mariama, Jahniah and Ethan.

Children in Need

Today in school we have been raising money for Children in Need. Children, who bought in a donation, were allowed to bring a teddy bear to school. Even Mr Broadfield bought his Spurs teddy in (Come on You Spurs!). There were also other activities and competitions to raise money. Each class in the school was set the challenge of creating their own Pudsey. Here are some pictures of the children designing and making Pudsey and Blush bear.

Improving our Comic Life

Although we were very pleased with the results of our Comic Life work yesterday we decided that they didn't look like traditional comics. We searched the web for a tutorial in GIMP that showed us how to give our work a 'Lichtenstein' effect. Here are some early examples of the work.
